How to draw an audio system diagram

A hi-fi system is easier to understand — and to explain — when you can see it. This guide breaks down the signal chain so you can map your own system.

Why diagram a hi-fi system?

Even a modest system quickly grows: a streamer feeds a DAC, the DAC feeds a preamplifier, an integrated amp drives the speakers, and a power distributor feeds everything. When something hums, clips, or needs upgrading, a clear audio system diagram saves hours. It is also the fastest way to brief a dealer, a support technician, or a friend — one picture instead of a page of cable descriptions.

The signal flows left to right

Nearly every hi-fi system follows the same pattern: a source produces a signal, intermediate stages refine it, and an output converts it to sound. A typical analog or digital chain looks like this:

    Vinyl, CD or streaming — where the music enters.

  2. 2. Phono stage / DAC

    Converts the raw signal to line level.

  3. 3. Preamplifier

    Input selection and volume control.

  4. 4. Power amplifier

    Drives the speakers with real current.

    The final link — electricity becomes sound.

Digital and analog are two parallel chains

Real systems mix both worlds. A network switch, music server and streamer belong to the digital chain; a turntable, tonearm and phono stage belong to the analog chain. They meet at the preamplifier or integrated amplifier. Keeping them in separate lanes in your diagram prevents cables from crossing everywhere and makes the system readable at a glance. Sometimes one box does two jobs — a streaming DAC, or an integrated amplifier with a built-in phono stage — and a good diagram simply notes that.

Power is its own layer

Mains power is not part of the signal chain, so draw it separately — usually as a rail beneath the components. A power distributor or conditioner sits between the wall outlet and every component, and its cables radiate upward to each box. Separating power from signal in the diagram mirrors good practice in the listening room, where power and interconnect cables should cross at right angles, not run parallel.

Network cabling, too

Streaming systems add a third kind of connection: Ethernet. A network outlet or router feeds switches, servers and streamers. Like power, network runs are best shown underneath the signal path so they do not clutter the diagram.
